A beautiful rug can be the centrepiece of any room, the equivalent of an oil painting for your floor and bringing together the décor and furnishings in a way that will always sing out to everyone who sees it.
All the help and advice you need to find a carpet which will have that kind of impact comes from a long-established family business in Surrey, based in the popular antique area of Dorking.
The Rug Centre is owned by Masoud Yarash, the fourth member of his family and along with his brother they follow in their father’s and grandfather’s footsteps before them of rug making, importing and selling.
Originating from Mazar-E-Sharif in Northern Afghanistan, the Yarash family have been in the rug trade for three generations and continue to produce and work closely with a variety of skilled rug weavers, mainly in the northern regions of the country, as well as working with weavers in India, Pakistan, Iran (formerly Persia) and China.
Masoud sells only hand-made rugs, the majority made from wool, some with a cotton warp, and some in pure silk. They vary from traditional to modern and contemporary, with a small section of the stock being antique
and rare investment pieces.
With no ‘middle man’ involved, the Rug Centre is able to be extremely competitive, offering ‘from the loom to the hand’ prices, rarely found elsewhere. Not to be confused with shops sporting similar names, it is probably one of the largest stockists of high- quality hand-made Eastern rugs in the UK with the shop being a gallery as well as showroom – well worth a visit just to feel and see the colours, patterns, sheen or matt surfaces and textures.
With such a stunning array to choose from, making the right choice can be daunting, but Masoud and his brother are experts in helping you select the perfect rug.
Don’t be shy to ask for help choosing – it’s not unusual for customers to feel overwhelmed by colours and styles, traditional, modern, vintage rugs, not knowing what direction they want to go in.
Masoud would normally recommend face-to-face contact in order to build up a picture of who you are, your tastes, your needs and any framework you are working within. Images and fabric and colour swatches really help.
Apart from a bit about you and your tastes, ideas or lack of, what they like to find out is where the rug will live, will it be on a wood, stone floor or carpet? The property age, purpose of room, the largest and smallest dimensions the rug can be, any other furnishings or artefacts it is going to live with, perhaps lifestyle, such as farm living or retirement. Maybe colour swatches of window covering or photo of a prized piece of furniture.
Masoud or his team can come to your home, office or rooms to get a full picture, prepare measurements and perhaps create a mood plan before suggesting rugs for you to have delivered to trial in your own setting. You are garanteed to find the perfect rug for you.
